Bagby Airfield, Thirsk
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is to benefit from a third operational base which is situated in North Yorkshire. The new satellite station at Bagby Airfield near Thirsk will allow one of the YAA helicopters to be based in the North Yorkshire area on known busy periods and has the facilities for them to re-fuel if they have been operating in the area. And Bagby Airfield are kindly allowing the YAA access to the Airfield free of charge!
Currently, the two Yorkshire Air Ambulances’s have permanent bases at Leeds Bradford International airport and Sheffield Business Park respectively and cover the whole of Yorkshire from there. Having the additional facilities at Bagby will strengthen the YAA coverage in the North of the region on a more regular basis during busy periods such as nice weather, bank holidays and weekends.
Peter Sunderland, Chairman of the YAA commented “The charity are delighted with their new facilities at Bagby airfield. This new base allows us to be more operationally flexible and will also assist the pilot and crew with access to re-fuelling the helicopters if they have been operating within the area. They have been provided with facilities that will allow the crew and helicopter to be operational at Bagby on known busy periods allowing quicker response time to incidents in the area. We are always looking to grow and further maximise the potential in the charity and the addition of the new operational base at Bagby will certainly assist us to do this.
Martin Scott, owner of Bagby Airfield also commented "Bagby Airfield and many in the local community have always done their upmost to support the valuable work undertaken by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This arrangement allows the Airfield to show continued commitment to this most vital public service"
It currently costs £7200 per day to keep the Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s in the air and saving lives. To find out how you can support this life-saving charity, please visit www.yaa.org.uk. To find out more about Bagby Airfield and the facilities they offer, please visit
